Released in 1996, David Fincher’s Seven quickly established itself as a quintessential thriller and has since become a cult film. After 28 years, the feature film will be screened in its final version at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. The latter will be held from April 18 to April 21, 2024.
Facelift for seven
David Fincher, who says he’s against change in movies, was involved in Seven’s 4K restoration. Although the artwork will not change, the image will be significantly improved thanks to the high resolution.
“I’m not going to take all the guns out of people’s hands and replace them with fans. But there’s a lot of crap to fix.”The filmmaker explained in June 2023 Tribeca Festival. Fincher meant Steven Spielberg; On ET’s 20th anniversary, he swapped guns for fans in a scene in the movie. Later the director regretted this decision at Variety’s microphone.

“I am fundamentally opposed to any change to the essence of seven.”he assured her. “3 or 5% of problems can be solved. If something is obvious, it needs to be taken care of”He emphasized and drew details to improve the rendering of the image.
So don’t worry, Seven’s traumatic ending will remain the same, and David Fincher has refined his work only on form, not content. In this way, Seven’s tough image and sticky atmosphere will be preserved.
As a perfectionist director, there is no doubt that Fincher had to spend many hours trying to fix even the slightest speck of dust that would tarnish the image of his precious Seven.
If audiences at the TCM Classic Film Festival get a chance to discover this restored version in April, we don’t know if French moviegoers will be eligible for this preferential treatment. Seven celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2 years, it’s likely that a nice re-release in a restored 4K version will be planned before then!
