NASA Highlights: Mars, Comet e+ in Astronomy Photos of the Week

Every Saturday, FreeGameGuide rounds up the astronomical photos that NASA has chosen to highlight during the week. Here you see beautiful images of the comet, clusters and more!

Images highlighted by NASA Throughout the week we are presented with scenes from Mars, eclipses seen from space, the Devil’s Comet and star and galaxy clusters.

Other highlights included Jupiter’s moon Europa and the sonification of a nebula resembling a supernova. Find out more about the objects and events in the images and see the photo gallery at the end of the list:

1. Acidalia Planitia

The selection of photos highlighted by NASA this week begins with the Martian craters Acidalia Planitia, which also feature sediment deposits. If you’ve seen the film The Martian, based on the book by Andy Weir, you may recognize the region: it was there that Ares 3, the fictional mission of the work, landed.

2. Earth during solar eclipse

A photo taken in 1999 by astronauts on the former Mir space station shows a view of a solar eclipse from space. Essentially, we see the Moon’s shadow cast on the Earth, giving us a better idea of how this phenomenon occurs.

3. Sonification of a nebula

Here NASA highlights the sonification of the Medusa Nebula (IC 443), created by the explosion of a massive star. Although sound does not travel through space, data sonification is a technique that can help understand these astronomical objects, especially for the blind.

4. The Devil’s Comet

A photo taken of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in Skull Valley, Utah, after sunset revealed a spectacular bluish tail pointing away from the Sun.

5. Galactic cluster

Thousands of galaxies appear in the photo showing the Coma cluster, located more than 300 million light-years from Earth. This galaxy cluster is one of the densest known, with a predominance of elliptical galaxies, each containing billions of stars.

6. Star cluster

The Omega Centauri star cluster, also known as NGC 5139, is made up of approximately 10 million stars and is 15,000 light-years from Earth. It is one of the largest and brightest star clusters in the Milky Way’s halo, and its stars are considerably older than the Sun.

7. Moon of Europe

NASA on Friday highlighted an image of Jupiter’s moon Galilei taken by the Galileo probe. It was this satellite that discovered evidence of a subterranean ocean there, and now we see remastered images of the curved fractures that suggest the presence of liquid water “buried” under the ice. Astronomers think the ocean may be capable of supporting life.
