Netflix subscribers have been waiting for it for a long time, and it’s finally here: the new series from the creators of Game of Thrones has already collected more than 11 million views on the platform since its release.
The 3-Body Problem is an ambitious science fiction series dreamed up by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and which they managed to transfer from Liu Cixin’s literary masterpiece and with the help of Alexander Wu (True Blood).
What is a 3-body problem?
The 3-Body Problem follows British government agent Clarence Shea (Benedict Wong) investigating a mysterious wave of suicides affecting the scientific community and joining forces with a group of experts, Auggie (Eisa Gonzalez), Jack (John). Bradley, Saul (Jovan Adepo), Jean (Jess Hong) and Will (Alex Sharp).
Their investigations lead them to a strange virtual reality game based on an advanced physics problem, but above all to humanity’s greatest threat: an extraterrestrial invasion.
And they understand that this upcoming attack is due to the appeal of an astrophysicist, Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng, the young and Rosalind Chao, the old), who was forced to work on research for the military during the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.
The series could have been released earlier!
Whether Game of Thrones fans or readers of Liu Cixin’s books, this adaptation of The 3-Body Problem has been eagerly awaited since the project was announced four years ago. And maybe you shouldn’t have waited so long to discover fiction.
We learn by grace The Hollywood Reporter That The 3-Body Problem has been slated for a release sometime around mid-2023. But the creators realized that the first episode was too raw and too confusing, because the audience was too quickly immersed in the complex knot of science.
Then they decided to add a five-minute scene: the one where Auggie and Gin are drinking in a bar. Thanks to their conversation, we get a better understanding of who they are on a professional and personal level, what the scientific issues are (thanks to the appreciated publicity) and, above all, we discover for the first time the countdown seen by Aug.

Without this scene, the viewer would have gone straight from Vera’s suicide to her funeral. So if this is just a scene to shoot and add, why is the 3-body problem only available in March 2024?
A double strike by the writers and actors simply delayed the writing and filming of this crucial scene according to the creators, and we can only applaud their decision to include this key sequence of understanding.
“We wrote the scene the day before the strike”DB Weiss explained to the Hollywood Reporter, “It was literally five pages, but we really thought it was worth it. Netflix was very understanding about it.”
The co-creator of the series was able to defend his point of view and was able to rely on the support of Netflix: “It would be very easy for them to say that : “You’ve got a finished series that’s ready to air and you have to put it on hold for five minutes with two people in a bar… and they’ve got the guts to confirm.”
The series The 3-Body Problem is available on Netflix.
