The long-awaited sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” titled “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” has found itself in a maze of delays and production challenges.
The release was initially scheduled for March 29, 2024 (i.e. this weekend), as recalled Gizmodothe film promises to conclude the trilogy that began with 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” acclaimed by both critics and audiences for its innovation in the boring universe.
In late 2021, co-writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller announced the decision to split the sequel into two films. However, a report from Vulture revealed severe management issues and tight schedules – especially in the animation phase – which raised doubts about whether Part 1 of the sequel could be completed for its scheduled release.
Following the report, Lord and Miller stated that Sony Animation would take its time to complete the film, without rushing to release it before it was completely finished.
In July last year, the film was removed from Sony’s 2024 release calendar, leaving a void filled by “Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse.” Furthermore, the Hollywood strikes also contributed to this decision, since there was still the recording phase of the characters’ voices.
Despite the challenges, expectations for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” remain high. Cast member Brian Tyree Henry expressed optimism about the film’s release, while screenwriter Lord promised a “very satisfying” conclusion to the trilogy.
While the new release date remains uncertain, there is speculation that the Miles Morales-starring film could hit theaters in the spring or summer of 2025.
