‘Anatomy of a Fall’: Is Sandra Really Guilty? The ending of the movie is explained

One of the most popular movies of 2023 is “Anatomy of a Fall”, which follows the story of a couple of writers, Sandra and Samuel, who compete with each other because of their profession. This results in constant fighting and huge tension in their home, where they live with their son Daniel, who has lost his sight due to an accident.

What is the movie ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ about?

Everything gets worse when the young man, after taking his dog for a walk, finds his father dead in the snow. Since there were no witnesses to what happened, the police created two theories. The first is that Samuel fell from the second floor of his house by accident and the second that he was murdered by his wife, who was at the scene, being the prime suspect.

In case you haven’t seen the movie, it’s important to know that there will be spoilers below.

Although she claims she had nothing to do with her husband’s death, during the trial evidence begins to emerge that could prove otherwise, for example, a recording of an argument they had shortly before Samuel’s death, the discovery of the affairs she had and Sandra lied to the police because she wanted to appear as innocent as possible.

Finally, the minor decided the fate of the protagonist, as he made some statements about the deterioration of his parents’ marriage. In fact, he recalls a conversation with his father, Samuel, who warned him about the eventual absence of Snoop’s dog and the need to envision life without him. In a revealing twist, Daniel realizes that Samuel was not referring to the dog, but to himself.

When facing the court, he issues a final statement acknowledging that although it was unthinkable for his mother to kill his father, he could conceive of the latter’s suicide, convincing himself of it in order to cope with said loss.

“Anatomy of a Fall” Ending Explained: The audience decides if Sandra is guilty or not

This keeps Sandra from being convicted of murder. However, the minor hesitates before deciding what to say because he doesn’t really know what happened and ends up stating what he believed to be true.

The film does not reveal whether or not Sandra is guilty of the crime she was accused of and in fact, director Justin Triet was indirectly asked about the ending, which in an interview with the portal “Slate” explained that “lack of images.” is the key to the story.

“Film is based on the lack of images, the lack of things. You miss things. So you fantasize about the thing.”

“Anatomy of a Fall” makes viewers decide whether to believe that Sandra is innocent or that she murdered her husband, making either one fit the story because there isn’t enough evidence.
