After conquering the fantasy genre with Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss probably realized they had potentially free reign to get whatever talent they wanted for their latest project, the big-budget adaptation of The 3-Body Problem. From the science fiction novel by Liu Sixin. , which arrived on Netflix ten days ago.
However, one person has remained steadfast in their ability to persuade, with the creative duo revealing that former President Barack Obama turned down their offer to make a cameo appearance.
Humourous rejection
David Benioff said USA Today that along with co-showrunner Alexander Wu (True Blood), they made the request after learning that Obama was a big fan of the original novel, which he called “Wildly imaginativeBut that wasn’t enough to convince him, according to Benioff:
He signed a very funny note when we were trying to get him for a cameo. It basically said, “If there’s going to be a real alien invasion, I think I should save myself for this crisis.”
Unfortunately, David Benioff does not reveal the content of the proposed role. Should Barack Obama have appeared as Barack Obama? That is, the former American president had to create a character? If we’re having fun speculating about the role she could play, we’re betting on CCH Pounder, who plays Lilian Joseph, the UN Secretary General, and who will appear in the final episode.
The 3-Body Problem marks Benioff and Weiss’ biggest project since Game of Thrones ended after eight seasons in 2019. The sci-fi series follows five characters who try to protect Earth from alien invaders. Liu Xixin’s novel has sold nine million copies since its publication in 2008 and won the Hugo Award, an American literary award given to the best works of science fiction and fantasy.
The 3-Body Problem is currently available on Netflix.
