One of five 80s thrillers saved by Tarantino
After winning five major Oscars in 1979, including Best Director for Journey to the End of Hell, arguably one of the greatest films in American cinema history, Michael Cimino was the American director most coveted by Hollywood.
However, barely two years later, he was the most hated, after the dismal failure of Heaven’s Gate, which nearly bankrupted United Artists. However, the filmmaker was able to bounce back, albeit briefly, with 1985’s extraordinary thriller: Year of the Dragon. One of Tarantino’s 5 (not one!) American thrillers from the 80s, a decade he considers too mediocre for the genre.
Based on a screenplay that Cimino wrote with Oliver Stone, based on Robert Dale’s novel, the film offers Mickey Rourke the biggest role of his career as Captain Stanley White, an obsessive and racist ex-Vietnam veteran. A particularly hard worker, he is willing to sacrifice everything in his personal crusade against Joy Tai.
In front of him was the equally fabulous John Lown, who would reach the peak of his career barely two years later in one of the great masterpieces of cinema: The Last Emperor. wonderfully staged, violent, Year of the Dragon It’s a very good movie. To watch or re-watch on Prime Video.
