Tite comments on Flamengo’s terrible performance against Millonarios: ‘There’s no point in hiding it, I’m a realist’

Tite analyzes Flamengo’s terrible performance, in the 1-1 draw against Millonarios, at the debut of the 2024 Libertadores.

In the press conference after the 1-1 draw between Flamengo and Millonarios, in the first round of the Libertadores group stage, coach Tite regretted the goal conceded at the end and the poor performance of the Rossoneri team. He stated that Flamengo suffered from the altitude and that the teams exchanged superiority during the 90 minutes.

– Football sometimes presents you with different phases. The Millonarios could have scored in the 15th minute of the first half, when they created volume and launched balls into the area. We missed a lot of passes, due to the altitude, this prevented us from using high quality attackers. The ball runs more. According to the coach, the Gávea club had a bad performance in the first phase and could have conceded a goal. After the break, the team came back more united, managed to break the deadlock, but equalized despite having one more player.

– First with the truth. There’s no point in hiding it, I’m a realist. In the first half, after 15 minutes, the team was below its standards. He came back much better, he deservedly scored the goal. It had volume. Deficiencies corrected. There are days. In an error, in an individual play… It is a process of evolution of the team.

Addressing the squad issue, Tite commented that nine Rossoneri players presented some type of physical problem before the match. De la Cruz had a viral infection and did not go to the stadium, while Léo Pereira and Ayrton Lucas started on the bench.

– We arrived with nine players who had some problems. Nine, from the last game until now. We had to do some revisions, I can’t go in with nine players, some feelings, some more details. Because, and this is the most important detail, we have players and a squad with a lot of quality. When you have a clinical or physical need to taper off, of course you have these great players to be able to participate. And this is where the names you mentioned come into play.

Flamengo will face Nova Iguaçu next Sunday, at 5pm (Brasilia time), at the Maracanã, in the second match of the final of the Campeonato Carioca 2024. In Libertadores, Rubro-Negro’s next opponent is Palestino (CHI), on 10/04 , at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), at the Maracanã.
