Synopsis of The Umbrella Academy

The story is set in a universe where 43 women around the world who were not pregnant gave birth at the same time on October 1, 1989. Of these children, seven were adopted by an eccentric billionaire named Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who gave them name of numbers, but almost eventually everyone adopted a name: Luther (Number One), Diego (Number Two), Allison (Number Three), Klaus (Number Four), Number Five (who has no other name), Ben (Number Six) and Vanya (Number seven) ). Six of the seven children are trained and sent to fight crime, except one, who appears to have no power.

First season

In the first season of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves family gathers in the ancient mansion where they spent their childhood to pay homage to the family patriarch, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who has passed away.

Although they spent their childhood fighting crime, each of them grew up and distanced themselves from the family following their own path, except Luther, who four years ago was on a mission to the moon, but Vanya became a violinist, Klaus is a drug addict , Allison is a famous actress, Diego is a vigilante, Ben is deceased and Number Five disappeared years ago.

However, during Sir Reginald’s wake, Number Five reappears – after being missing for 17 years – with the mission to prevent an apocalypse that will occur within eight days. It turns out that Number Five once traveled into the future until shortly after the apocalypse and there is only wreckage.

He begins working for Temps Aeternalis, an agency tasked with preserving the chronology of space-time. However, he escapes to go back in time again to find his brothers and prevent the end of the world, but two agents of Temps Aeternalis chase him to prevent him from changing the course of things.

In a fight against agents Hazel and Cha Cha, Klaus ends up taking their briefcase which causes him to travel through time and get trapped somewhere in the past. While there’s this cat-and-mouse chase between Number Five and the agents, Vanya runs into a student she was giving violin lessons to, who claims to be Leonard but, in reality, his name is Harold Jenkins. He has a deep grudge against Mr. Hargreeves and seeks revenge, and Number Five discovers that Jenkins is the cause of the approaching apocalypse.

Vanya discovers that she has been used not only by Jenkins, but also by her own family. It is then that we discover that Vanya actually has powers, but these were considered very dangerous by Sir Reginald and she was kept under surveillance, so she would never be able to participate in the fight against crime. Allison also used her powers to convince Vanya that she didn’t have her powers.

In the clash, Vanya releases an energy blast and part of the moon ends up being destroyed. A giant piece approaches Earth, about to destroy the planet with the apocalypse predicted by Five, but before the collision reaches them, Five manages to transport them to another place in space-time.

Second season

In the second season of The Umbrella Academy, after failing to save the world from the apocalypse, the Hargreeves brothers are forced to go back in time to try again, however, something goes wrong and each of the brothers find themselves in different years in the world. 1960s, in the city of Dallas.

Klaus goes to 1960, where he is spiritual leader and receives help from Ben who takes over his conscience. Allison is set in 1961, when segregation in the United States is on the rise, and she ends up getting married and becoming a human rights activist. Luther is in 1962, where he lives practicing boxing in an illegal ring and working in the nightclub owned by the famous Jack Ruby, responsible for the killing of Lee Harvey Oswald, suspected of the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, who, from By the way, it’s the year Diego falls, a few weeks before this event, but ends up locked up in a psychiatric hospital. Vanya stays in 1962, just like Number One, but she suffers from amnesia and does not remember who she is nor if she has any powers, and begins working for a peasant family. And finally, Number Five appears in November 1963 where she discovers that there will be another apocalypse that she will have to prevent.

As they band together and try to find a way to save the world, Handler, who is not actually dead, is punished with a demotion to the Commission and plans to carry out a coup with the help of her adopted daughter Lila Pitts, who becomes friend of Diego, to investigate the footsteps of the Hargreeves family. Meanwhile, Ben helps Vanya recover her memories, but Number Six’s soul ends up dying forever.

The operation to prevent the assassination of President Kennedy fails and they are accused of being terrorists. During her time on the farm, Vanya falls in love with Sissy Cooper but, unintentionally, ends up transferring some of her powers to Sissy’s son.

The events culminate when Handler appears with an army and Lila, who has the power to mimic her opponents’ powers, and although the Hargreeves manage to defeat the army, they are killed by Handler. Luckily, when all was lost, Five, who was in her final moments, goes back in time seconds before Handler killed the Umbrella Academy, and Axel appears and shoots her, saving everyone.

Vanya tries to take away the powers of Harlan, who was stuck inside a force field without knowing what was happening. Five take a time-winding suitcase so they can all return to 2019, but arriving home they find Sir Reginald alive and a group of ambitious people called The Sparrow Academy living in his mansion.

Third season

Once again the brothers of the Umbrella Academy find themselves in an alternate reality. This time, Sir Reginald is alive and the children he raised are not them, but a group called The Sparrow Academy.

The two groups fight, but the Sparrow Academy appears stronger than the Umbrella Academy, who flee, hiding in the Obsidian Hotel, but end up leaving the time travel briefcase in the mansion, and when Marcus goes to return the briefcase to them he discovers Kugelblitz. , a phenomenon born due to a time paradox, which works like a black hole, and “swallows” pieces of reality.

Vanya goes through a moment of self-discovery and realizes that he actually identifies as a man and changes his name to Viktor. Five and Klaus discover that all of their mothers died before they were born in that reality, creating the grandfather paradox, which is a phenomenon that occurs when someone travels through time and ends up changing something that prevents their own birth.

After discovering the Kugelblitz, the Sparrow Academy and the Umbrella Academy face off, with the latter nearly defeated. Lester arrives on the scene and launches an energy blast towards Sparrow Academy, killing Alphonso and Jayme. Viktor discovers that Lester is, in fact, Harlan Cooper, Sissy Cooper’s son, and that Harlan has spent his life on the run because he didn’t know how to control the powers transferred to him by Viktor (who was still called Vanya at the time) in 1963 .

Five and Lila discover an older version of Five who is about to die, but before leaving he advises his younger self not to try to save the world.

Harlan tells Viktor that when Sissy died, she lost control of her powers and accidentally killed the mothers of her Umbrella Academy brothers, causing the grandfather paradox. The brothers decide to deliver Harlan to Sparrow Academy, but, feeling guilty for all the trauma he caused the boy, Viktor asks Allison to take him out of the hotel.

We discover that inside the Hotel Obsidian there is a suite called White Buffalo, which has a ticket to another hotel called Hotel Oblivion, which Reginald is obsessed with. Unaware that Viktor had not told Allison, Harlan tells her that he was responsible for killing the mothers of the Umbrella Academy members and, as a result, prevented the birth of Claire, Allison’s daughter who she missed dearly and for who was suffering. the loss, and to get revenge, Allison kills Harlan and delivers him to Sparrow Academy.

Lila, Sloane, Christopher and Viktor combine their powers to trap the Kugelblitz in Christopher, but Christopher explodes, releasing the phenomenon again.

In the midst of the world’s impending destruction, Luther and Sloane get engaged and married, with Viktor as best man, leaving Ben a little upset, but the family shares a happy moment. It is then that we discover that Sir Reginald has built the Obsidian Hotel around a portal that has a button that “resets” the universe, with a machine located in another hotel called the Obsidian Hotel, a “mirror” of the Obsidian . In order to save the world, seven people must pass through the tunnel and ring seven bells.

Reginald kills Luther and convinces everyone that he was a guardian. The group manages to defeat the Guardians, but Five’s arm is cut off and Reginald forces everyone to stand on top of the stars to activate the “reset” process of the universe, except Allison who realizes that this is killing Five’s brothers. she. She kills Sir Reginald, but still touches the button that activates the machine that is supposed to fix everything.

Finally, we move on to the scene where Allison returns home to find her daughter, Claire, and Ray, who is her husband and Claire’s father in this reality. The brothers discover the Obsidian Hotel memorial, Luther is alive and without his gorilla hybrid parts, reverting to a fully human body, but Sloane is nowhere to be found and, apparently, all their powers are gone.

The brothers end up going their separate ways, as Sir Reginald appears holding his late wife’s hand. In the post-credit scene, we see Ben on a train reading something, with a mysterious smile on his lips.

The end of season three left everyone worried about what will happen to the brothers of The Umbrella Academy. Luther will obviously hunt down his wife Sloane, Five will certainly look for a solution to get his powers back, and Sir Reginald who, despite having died before saving the world, appeared very alive in the last scene and, apparently, the owner of a empire, but which could still play a relevant role in the upcoming 4th and final season of The Umbrella Academy.
