Everything is ready for the 28th Sao Paulo International Marathon

The kits will be delivered to the 18,000 registered participants between Thursday and Saturday, at Ibirapuera Park

On the morning of this Sunday, April 7, 18 thousand people are expected at the 28th Sao Paulo International Marathon, one of the main competitions of this sport in Brazil and the first to obtain the World Athletics Seal (international athletics federation), which had registrations sold out. The delivery of the kits to members will begin this Thursday and continue until Saturday, at the Expo Atleta, in the Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras (Pacubra), in Ibirapuera Park. The test will be broadcast live on Yescom’s YouTube channel.

In addition to the 42km (marathon), the half marathon (21km), 10km and 5km will take place, starting at 6.10am, near the Obelisk. Each of these modes has a different start, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to position yourself at the correct gate. Along the route there will be 18 support points with water, medical assistance, toilets, as well as other points with sports drinks, food and music.

ELITE

The total prize money is R$40,000 and will be split up to seventh place in the Elite, male and female categories. The champion and champion will each receive R$7,000. In the men’s category, the athletes are Ederson Vilela from São Paulo (champion of the Curitiba Marathon and runner-up at the Volta Internacional da Pampulha last year), Renilson da Silva from Minas Gerais (3rd at the 2023 São Paulo International Half Marathon and 4th at the Foz do Maratona Iguaçu in 2023); Geilson Conceição, also from São Paulo (champion of the Porto Alegre Marathon in 2022 and two-time champion of the Salvador Marathon – 2019 and 2021); and Franck Caldeira (champion of São Silvestre and Volta da Pampulha, among others). In the women’s category, the excellences are the Kenyan Faridah Chelanga (champion of the Curitiba Marathon 2023); Emily Chebet (champion of the 2nd Guarulhos International Half Marathon); the Bolivian Helen Daniela Baltazar Medina (4th in the Pan American Marathon Championship of Caracas – 2023) and the Brazilian Renata Moreno dos Santos (4th in the Sao Paulo International Marathon – 2023).

For almost three decades, the São Paulo Marathon has brought together the best of road running and it was there that the national record of the sport, in the men’s category, was broken in 2002, by Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, bronze medalist Athens 2004, who won the race with a time of 2h11min19, which also remains the race record. The Brazilian Marcia Narloch is the athlete with the highest number of victories, three in total, obtained in the 1999, 2000 and 2005 editions. She is in fact also the holder of the national record, with 2:34:10 in the Porto Alegre Marathon, in 2000. The women’s record for the São Paulo marathon is held by Kenyan Rumokol Chepkanan – 2:31:21, set in 2012.

In the 2023 edition, Kenyan Vestus Cheboi Chemjor was the winner, completing the 42km in 2h15min20s, in his first participation.
