YouTube: Shorts can now be exclusive to channel subscribers

YouTube has introduced the possibility of making Shorts exclusive for channel subscribers. In practice, the new function announced by the platform will allow content creators to place some of their videos published in TikTok-style format behind paywalls.

For those in a hurry:

Short film creators will be able to raise the new paywalls by choosing the “Members Only” option, which will appear in the “visibility” menu. Short films released only to channel subscribers will be marked with a star icon. To watch these videos, viewers will need to purchase a subscription to the channel in question.

The Web site TechCrunch pointed out that YouTube considers Shorts’ “Subscribers Only” section a valuable tool for creators who want to host Q&A sessions, take fans behind the scenes, or announce future projects, for example. YouTube also advised creators to adopt a casual tone for their paywalled Shorts, so that viewers feel like they have intimate access to the channels they support financially.

More broadly, the new revenue source adds to the growing number of monetization options for TikTok-style videos on the platform. YouTube recently released a publish on your blog to celebrate the one-year anniversary of ads in Shorts. In the post he highlighted that 25% of creators in the YouTube Partner Program have activated Shorts monetization in the last 12 months.

YouTube Shorts vs. TikTok

YouTube isn’t the only platform that has implemented paywalls on its short-form content. The availability of the subscription TikTok LIVE has been on the rise since 2022 and the app, owned by ByteDance, recently announced that “on demand” content creators will also be able to subscription fee.
