Warning, spoilers! This article will reveal the basic elements of plotting the 3-body problem. If you haven’t seen the series and don’t want to know what it’s about, don’t read on.
You miss the golden days when Game of Thrones was the show that defined the 2010s and set a new standard for heated discussions in the age of social media. And now that the HBO series is over, can’t you see yourself in The 3-Body Problem, DB Weiss and David Benioff’s new creation? Don’t lose hope!
Based on Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel, the ambitious sci-fi series marks Benioff and Weiss’ first major project for Netflix after signing an exclusivity deal with the broadcaster in 2019. And although on the surface, The 3-Body Problem is very different. From Game of Thrones, it’s actually pretty close.
The weather is coming
It’s impossible not to think of that famous disaster announcement from Game of Thrones, “Winter is Coming,” when The 3-Body Problem reveals its intentions with this alien invasion announced 400 years earlier. When these extraterrestrials, the San-T, reveal their existence to all of humanity in a horrific global hack, the phrase “YOU ARE BUGS” appears on every screen.
This mysterious phrase threatens humanity – and it is everywhere. No place is safe from San-T. Man may be the most dominant species on earth, but to them he is only a parasite. What exactly does this ominous phrase mean for our future? Nothing good, because the Sun-ti are an extraterrestrial civilization that will travel through space for 400 years to conquer Earth and destroy its inhabitants like insects under their shoes. The Netflix series takes the exact same premise as the HBO series: the apocalypse is coming, get ready!
joining forces
In both cases, to meet an event such as the end of the world, it is important to emphasize the complex and emotional interpersonal relationships. In Game of Thrones, we follow the heroes (Starks, Daenerys, Lannisters and others) on epic journeys, whether it’s crossing wild lands or meeting mythical creatures, of course we think of dragons.
The action in the 3-body problem is limited to China in the 1960s and London today. If the humans, led by Thomas Wade (Liam Cunningham), try to send Will (or at least his brain) on a technologically dangerous interstellar journey, the characters’ journeys are primarily psychological and spiritual. It is a human story that is at once simple, profound and intimate.
A novel that is considered maladaptive
When George RR Martin wrote iron throneHe specifically designed it to be impossible to shoot. And that didn’t stop D.B. Weiss and David Benioff to go see him and say “We want to film itAnd to convince him! The challenge was daunting, but the success of the series – which became a true global phenomenon – proved them right.
Following this success – and despite mixed reviews of the final seasons, which were not directly adapted from the books – they took on the same challenge with Liu Cixin’s Three Body Problem, also known for its difficulty. Liu Sixin’s best-selling novel has long been considered inappropriate for its time jumps, philosophical dilemmas, and close explorations of scientific theory. But, once again, Weisz and Benioff succeed in their bet, highlighting the characters and their humanity. So don’t wait to dive (again) into the 3-body problem, this trip is worth the detour.
