Lucas Gonçalves replaced the suspended Gabriel Milito in Atlético Mineiro’s defeat against Caracas this Thursday (4)
Without being able to count on the suspended coach Gabriel Milito, Atlético Mineiro debuted in the Libertadores with assistant Lucas Gonçalves on the sidelines. Even without the Argentine having had direct contact with the team, Galo easily won 4 to 1. According to Lucas, the result is already proof of how well Milito’s methodology works. He underlined how much the coach works on ball possession, which showed up on Thursday (4).
“Caracas played against us with a low line. And one of the characteristics of our team is ball possession. He (Milito) likes to control the game that way. It’s a complex idea, which requires time and training. But , a few, the team starts following him because this is one of his main ideas,” Lucas said.
Lucas also said that Milito never hid that this was the way of playing he wanted at Atlético. Although it was emphasized that the adoption of the style will still take time for the team to fully adapt, an example was already clear in the Caracas match:
“Since his arrival, Milito has been very clear about the way he sees football. He has a very interesting teaching style, but these ideas depend on time: it’s a process. So, obviously, as time passes, the movements become more evident. The more there are training sessions and daily opportunities, the more the players will absorb the ideas and consequently they will maintain the quality seen in the first half for longer.”
