Applications are open until April 15 and are valid for five scholarships of up to R$35,000 per year in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses outside the country

Study abroad It is the dream of many people. But, for those who don’t have the financial means to pay for an exchange, getting a Scholarship This is not an easy task, especially for students black.

The Baobá Fund, dedicated to racial equity actions, and B3 Social, a non-profit association of Brazilian stock exchange, created a new scholarship abroad, called Black STEM, exclusively for people of color. Registrations are open until April 15th, at project website.

The help, which can reach R$35 thousand for a 12-month study periodwith the possibility of annual renewal until the course is completed, it will be aimed at young people of color admitted to degree courses at foreign universities, within the area internationally known as STEM, which includes:

  • Science;
  • Technology;
  • Engineering;
  • Mathematics.

The goal is to support the student’s stay abroad with expenses such as rent, transportation, food and academic materials. “Initially there will be five scholarships. But will these five students be an example for another 50, another 500?”, says Tainá Medeiros, project coordinator of the Baobá Fund.

“Some spaces still escape the reality of black students. There are things they don’t consider tangible, like attending a university abroad, especially those who attended public schools,” Tainá says.

“We want to contribute by offering support for access, but also by encouraging the presence of this perspective in your reality. The call is a first step in this direction”, he adds.

The call also has the support of the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA), a non-profit association formed by Brazilian students who attend courses abroad and who in 2021 created their own orientation and financial support program for young blacks low-income to study abroad, BRASA Black Honors.

Created in 2011, Baobá mobilizes people and resources, in Brazil and abroad, to support projects, initiatives and actions to combat racism, promote social justice and racial equity for the black population across the country.

Until 2023, the fund has invested more than R$18.5 million in 940 initiatives and actions of this type, impacting more than 800 thousand people.
