Before starring as Gotham’s Underworld King in Penguin, the TV series based on Matt Reeves’ Batman, Colin Farrell fought crime in Sugar. In this new series, the Irish actor plays detective John Sugar, who is hired to find missing people. This investigation will lead him to the depths of humanity, amidst lies, manipulation and sordid family stories.
So is his latest mission: to find Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a major Hollywood producer. The whole story takes place in Los Angeles, a key city that becomes a character in itself. Torn between great wealth and extreme poverty, a glamorous reputation and unsuspected violence, the City of Angels is an ideal setting for the series.
Sugar is a love letter to film noir. When watching the first episode, it is impossible not to think of works like LA Confidential or Chinatown. To prepare, Colin Farrell watched a number of genre films such as The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon. This is not the first time that the actor plays a detective, we remember, in another genre, in the second season of Miami Vice and True Detective.
The originality here is the approach of this character, John Sugar, a man who hates violence even though he has to fight it every day. The first series, entirely in black and white, takes you straight into the action with an impressive and bloody fight scene.
The series consists of eight episodes Sugar Available on Apple TV+.
