“Quantum Leap” is canceled after two seasons

Continuation of a cult series of the same title, the attraction recorded the lowest number of viewers of its network

The American network NBC announced the cancellation of “Quantum Leap”, a science fiction series that rebooted the attraction of the same name, which aired from 1989 to 1993. The program concluded its second season in February and was among the lowest-rated original productions rated audience of the broadcaster.

“Quantum Leap” was produced in-house by Universal Television and was quickly renewed for a second season so NBC could have streaming content during the writers’ and actors’ strikes that paralyzed Hollywood last year.

Premise and production

The series was a continuation of the original attraction, also known in Brazil as “Contratempos”. The first episode began with an investigation into what happened to the former protagonist of the plot, Doctor Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula), who 30 years ago entered the Quantum Leap accelerator and disappeared – literally, since the first version was canceled without the writers could give a conclusion to the plot.

As the project resumes, a new scientist is sent through time in the same bizarre way as Doctor Beckett: by jumping into the bodies of different people in different eras. But just as it happened 30 years ago, Dr. Benjamin “Ben” Song, played by Raymond Lee (“Here and Now”), also ended without a proper ending. Although the overarching plot concluded at the end of the second season, the final moments offered an important story development that promised to significantly change the dynamics of the series in a possible third season.

The reboot was produced by Steven Lilien (creator of “God Added Me”), Bryan Wynbrandt (showrunner of “La Brea”) and Martin Gero (creator of “Blindspot”). The creator of the original “Quantum Leap,” Don Bellisario, was also on board as a producer. And in addition to Lee, the cast also included Anastasia Antonia (“It’s Called Murder”), Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Mason Alexander Park (“Sandman”), Jewel Staite (“Family Law”) and Georgina Reilly (“The Mysteries”). of Murdoch”).

First cancellation of the season

“Quantum Leap” was NBC’s first cancellation of the season, and came after the network announced five series renewals from producer Dick Wolf — from the “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchises. The production cut also comes after the channel aired the finales of two other drama series, “La Brea” and “Magnum PI.”
