Netflix reinvents the rom com with an ’80s icon! Watch the trailer

Two genres are taking over on Netflix: action movies and romantic comedies. So it’s only natural that our interest is focused on Mother of the Bride , the new upcoming rom com, especially since it puts Brooke Shields back in the spotlight.

In this feature film, she plays Lana, a mother struggling with the loss of her daughter after moving out of the family home. Things get even more complicated when he learns that he is getting married in Thailand in a month.

That’s not all. When she arrives in Thailand, Lana discovers the real story: her future fiance is none other than the son of the man who broke Lana’s heart years ago. Since then, a new chapter opens.

An homage to the iconic 90s film

The film’s title automatically refers to Father of the Bride, the cult nineties comedy starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. The originality of this project: putting a novel with a middle-aged woman at the center of the story. The detail – which is not one – is rarer than it seems.

Mother of the Bride is directed by Mark Waters, the director of Lolita, Despite Me. The cast includes, among others, Chad Michael Murray, Lucas Scott of 2000s TV series The Scott Brothers.

Brooke Shields, rare actress

Brooke Shields, a major star in the eighties, gradually retreated, making a few appearances here and there in TV series and a few American cable TV movies.

In 2023, she mainly spoke in a documentary called Pretty Baby, the title of which refers to Louis Malle’s 1977 film La Petite, in which the actress, then only 12 years old, played a prostitute who was forced to marry an adult man.
