It’s bad news for fans of Quantum Code (2022), the reboot starring Raymond Lee: NBC has effectively decided not to renew it for a third season. The news comes more than a month after the final episode of Season 2 aired on February 20 in the US – a special two-hour episode that will therefore be the last.
The news isn’t entirely surprising, as the Universal TV series has been in a hot spot: a real contrast to the previous season, when everyone was eagerly awaiting the announcement of a second season, which will be released in December 2022.
A continuation of the original series with the iconic Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993. quantum code (2022) is set in the present day. The new show marks 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) entered the Code Quantum accelerator and disappeared. Now, a new team has assembled to revive the project, hoping to learn the secrets behind the machine and the man who created it.
Next to Raymond LeeThe series also starred Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park and Nanrisa Lee.
An ending that is not one
Speaking to Deadline last February, co-showrunners Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris said that the Season 2 finale wasn’t written as a series finale, but that it wrapped up the action in a neat and empowering way.
“When we got the early season 2 update, we knew we weren’t going to end on a cliffhanger“, said Georgaris. “We were going to end it in the first scene of Season 3 and we were going to end it with the two characters together, but in a way that we didn’t expect. And he’s kind of saying to the audience, “Look at all the great places we can go.” So if that’s the end for the audience, that’s great. It’s the end of part of the journey, but I think for us it’s the beginning of the rest of the journey.“

Georgaris also talked about his streak being in the hot seat. “The new reality we’re all getting used to is that it’s not just one note anymore. It’s not just about one number. There are several platforms“, he said. “So the truth is, I think every showrunner and every series creator lives in a bubble for the most part. Comes with it. And that is very good.“
In an interview with Deadline in February, Universal TV president Erin Underhill also admitted that “The way they conclude can be a satisfying ending, but they can also move on“, and noted that the decision was expected in April.
Expressing optimism and cautioning that much will depend on NBC’s development and 2024 pilots, he added: “I think everyone has a lot of support for this series and a big fan base because it’s a staple title in the library for us.“
The reaction of the stars of the show
Two stars of the series spoke about the cancellation of the show on social networks. Raymond LeeThe actor who played Dr. Ben Song posted his moving farewell on Instagram.

“I just want to thank our QL fans and those who listened. He felt your support and was always warmly received. You have all had the adventure of a lifetime. We are very proud of the show we produced and even more proud of the stories we were able to tell. And selfishly for me, I could make some really awesome friends along the way. If and when another group takes over the Accelerator and its capabilities, we may find ourselves back in time trying to fix what went wrong.“
