In the 9th century, many separate kingdoms in England fell to invading Vikings, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex alone under King Alfred.
It is in this turbulent context that Uhtred lives. The son of a Saxon nobleman, he was captured by the Vikings and raised as one of them. When her adopted Danish father is murdered and blamed, she finds herself torn between her two cultures. Forced to choose between his original people and his guardian, his loyalty is constantly tested. In an attempt to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must walk the perilous path between the two opposing camps to play his part in the birth of a new nation and possibly reclaim the lands of his ancestors. His adventures lead him to the court of King Alfred, who would greatly contribute to the formation of Great Britain.
Inspired by the literary series Saxon stories By Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom is a history lesson disguised as an epic series that we never tire of watching. If the central character is fictional (or almost so), the world in which it takes place is not: in the program, therefore, authenticity and very real historical and religious facts with minimal liberties.
Created for TV by Steven Bouchard – who also lurked in the series for Season 3 – the series first aired on BBC Two in 2015. For the second season, Netflix is co-producing it to distribute it internationally – and that’s a blessing. In 2018, the platform completely picked up the show, which will run for three more seasons under its iconic red banner.
Intense and exhilarating, depressing and breathtaking, coherent and immersive, the last kingdom It has absolutely nothing to envy to its counterparts Vikings, Tudors or Outlanders (to name a few): the sense of adventure, the sets, the costumes and the visuals are also stunning. He is flawed and sensitive at the same time, played by the wonderful Alexander Dreymon with his game and devastating charm.
In addition to offering fast-paced action and larger-than-life battles, accompanied by a variety of emotions (and a beautifully animated song, not to be forgotten), the British historical drama has a characteristic of never running out of steam. Over the course of the seasons, it becomes more and more interesting and succeeds in challenging the continuation without losing interest and introducing new characters to whom we quickly become attached – in addition to those we have already followed for a long time – and this is not always the case, we know that.
