Filming was recently completed in Morocco for the upcoming biblical thriller Mary (no Portuguese title yet). Although it hasn’t had much prominence so far, with up-and-coming Israeli actress Noa Cohen in the lead role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, the film heralded an actor who was expected to quickly change that: veteran Anthony Hopkins, in the role of King Herod .
The information was revealed exclusively by the portal expiration this Wednesday (10).
At this point in my life, I feel drawn to the challenge of complex scripts. Additionally, the level of detail given to this production, with stunning sets, props and costumes, makes me proud to be a part of it.
Anthony Hopkins, in a statement
Hopkins was set to play King Herod the Great. He embodied this historical figure of a king steeped in mental illness and greed with such ferocity.
Mary Aloe, producer of the film, in a statement
Mary
I want to present to the world a representation of the real human Mary. Her story has a little-known beginning; it’s really worth telling. Portraying her from birth to childhood and presenting her as a human being with apprehensions and fears will be a celebration of all that is inspiring and heartbreaking about her journey.
DJ Caruso, director of the film, in a statement
Cast and production
Joining Anthony Hopkins and Cohen is a talented cast that includes Mila Harris, Ido Tako, Stephanie Nur, and Ori Pfeffer, among others. Cohen, in particular, has a deep connection to the role, having been born and raised near Mary’s birthplace.
The film is produced by a team that includes Karen Hartley Thomas, James Merifield, Tina Kalivas and Gavin Struthers. Behind the scenes, major investors like Roger Dorman and Angie Staten have joined forces to support this ambitious project.
Additionally, Pastor Joel Osteen, known for his influential broadcasts, is set to contribute to the film’s marketing campaign. “What attracted me to this project was how the script represents a real progression in telling Maria’s story. It immerses audiences in her incredible journey to becoming one of the most influential women in all of history,” she said in a statement.
