The Navy disputes Furg’s revocation of honorifics and generates a national debate.
The Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg) became the center of a national discussion when it revoked the honorifics of figures linked to the military dictatorship in Brazil. The measure, which included personalities such as Admiral Maximiano Eduardo da Silva Fonseca, Minister of the Navy during the government of João Baptista Figueiredo, sparked criticism and heated debates on the public recognition of figures linked to this historical period.
The revocation of the titles took place last Friday (5) and also affected the titles of Emilio Garrastazu Medici and Golbery do Couto e Silva. The Navy, for its part, expressed deep dissatisfaction with Furg’s decision, according to a letter issued on Monday (8) by Navy Commander Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, classifying it as “biased.”
The university justified its decision by mentioning the serious human rights violations attributed to Maximiano Fonseca by the National Truth Commission. According to the commission, Fonseca was identified as the perpetrator of such violations while he was in command of the hydrographic vessel Canopus, which was used as a prison for political prisoners during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
