What is immersive cinema? Virtual reality films arrive at the Cannes Film Festival

Yes, the future has arrived at film festivals, perhaps the most famous and emblematic of them. The Cannes Film Festival announced this Wednesday (10th) the launch of a new category within the award, focused on the so-called immersive cinema.

But what is immersive cinema? In a statement, the Cannes organization explains that “immersive, collective and interactive works will be shown that use virtual reality, augmented reality and other cutting-edge technologies to transcend conventional narrative and transport the audience into other worlds, narratives and eras”.

The text also mentions the film Flesh and Arenaby director Alejandro González Iñárritu, a feature film presented at the festival in 2017 with this format: “virtually present, physically invisible”.

It is worth noting that Iñárritu received a special Oscar for the project. The Academy’s management decided to honor the director’s work as “recognition of a visionary and powerful narrative experience.”

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from 15 to 24 May, will propose eight works in the immersive cinema competition.

The awards ceremony will take place in a separate special ceremony.
