With Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny in the cast, the highly anticipated super production Civil war is about to hit Brazilian cinemas on April 18, bringing with it an intense saga of battles and unbridled action. Some behind-the-scenes information about this cinematic epic has been revealed exclusively to offering an exciting look at what viewers can expect.
One of the most surprising curiosities is the use of real weapons during filming. Unlike many contemporary productions that rely on post-production to add gunshot sounds, Civil war chose to use hollow bullets, providing a visceral sound experience.
Kirsten Dunst, who plays photojournalist Lee, said she had to wear earplugs in the scenes to muffle the effect.
But the body reacts naturally: you hear a shot and you want to jump. Especially when we were in closed spaces, it was even louder. I remember being in the hair and makeup trailer, which was far from the set, and the whole place was shaking because of an explosion they were filming.

Furthermore, recreating a battle in Washington, D.C., in the city of Atlanta, required a tremendous effort from the production team. “We built buildings over 100 meters long on both sides of the street in three and a half weeks,” reveals Caty Maxey, the film’s production designer. “This scene is perhaps the one where the action feels most engaging, with every moment choreographed to be as authentic as possible.”
To ensure that the fight scenes reflected reality, director Alex Garland relied on the expertise of military advisor Ray Mendoza, a former member of the US Navy. “When a war takes place in a city, the military can attack from the ground, from the air and even from the rooftops,” explains Mendoza. “I worked to give the film all these layers, because when you’re in a combat zone everything is 360º.”

The editing of the battle scenes has been compared to a football match, with Garland and his team carefully outlining every move.
It was possible to put together a very sophisticated choreography: a tank moved, while a Humvee quickly advanced towards the other Humvees, and as the vehicle passed, some soldiers got out.

Another highlight of the shoot was the use of the DJI Ronin 4D camera, which offered a unique and immersive perspective on the action scenes. “It does something incredibly useful in that it self-stabilizes in a controlled way, from silky smooth to shaky cam vérité,” explains Garland. “For me this is revolutionary. It’s not right for every movie, but it’s incredibly good for some.”
