Relapse | How the series sets the stage for season two

The Prime Video adaptation, Fallout, tries to tell a relatively closed story, but leaves enough room for its characters to return

Fall, Prime Video’s adaptation of Bethesda’s video game franchise, does its job by treating its first season as if it were a new game in the series, introducing new characters and a new story. It would be enough to tell a closed story, but the version that arrived at streaming from the Amazon prepares viewers for more stories featuring Lucy, Maximus and the Ghoul.

The first season of Fall follows the three characters on a journey to find a head that would serve as an exchange for Hank MacLean, superintendent of Vault 33 and Lucy’s father. If you haven’t watched all the episodes yet, please note that we will be discussing spoilers for the ending.

New roads open up

In the latest episodes of Fallwe discover that Hank MacLean, born in Vault 31, is actually over 200 years old and was an employee of Vault-Tec, the company that built the nuclear shelters scattered across the United States.

The whole war and the detonation of the nuclear bombs was a plan of the company, which colluded with other companies who want to profit from the apocalypse. Vault 31 was where Vault-Tec employees were installed and frozen, with the goal of being revived in the future.

This happened to some people, chosen to lead shelters 32 and 33. This discovery puts Hank in the crosshairs of the Ghoul, who before the bombs was a Hollywood actor married to a Vault-Tec executive. Having survived more than 200 years due to his mutation, he is still searching for his family and only MacLean can reveal this information.

Hank flees, leaving Ghoul and his daughter Lucy behind. Maximus, the squire of the Brotherhood of Steel, ends up being abandoned by the two, who embark on a journey in search of answers.

The Brotherhood of Steel will also have greater visibility in a possible second season (Image: Disclosure/Prime Video)

The Brotherhood ends up in the power of a cold fusion machine, capable of producing infinite energy, bringing electricity back to the Republic of New California. Maximus becomes a hero, even though he feels he should be with Lucy.

In the final moments, the Ghoul and Lucy set out together on a journey across the Wastelands, leaving the region behind. Hank arrives at the destination, where the real leaders are, showing New Vegas on the horizon.

More gaming connections

The biggest surprise at the end of the season is actually the reveal of New Vegas, the setting for one of the best games in the series, Fallout: New Vegas. Although the series is set several years after the game, the possibility that locations and some characters will be shown or mentioned should excite many fans.

Although Vault-Tec is one of the money-hungry corporations in the franchise, the series helped further develop the idea of how the corporation affected the war and the situation the world finds itself in. This should be addressed more in a possible second season, as well as the location of the Brotherhood of Steel, now possessing infinite energy.

To date, Amazon has not confirmed a second season of Fallwhich if announced, should debut only in the second half of 2025.
