In addition to the five people who died after being stabbed in a shopping mall in the Australian city, the alleged attacker was shot dead, according to police.
Five people have died after multiple stabbings at a shopping mall in Sydney, Australia, according to police.
Other victims were taken to hospital in serious condition and among the injured a small child was identified this Saturday (13/4).
The man suspected of being the attacker was killed by a police officer who was near the scene.
“He confronted the offender,” Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters in an interview near the shopping center where the attack occurred.
“As she walked quickly behind him to get to him, he turned, looked at her and raised a knife. She fired a firearm and that person died,” he described.
After the attack, police said there was “no ongoing threat” to the public and that the attacker “acted alone”.
According to Australian authorities, the motivation for the attack is still under investigation.
The Australian prime minister said “our hearts go out to the injured” and thanked the rescue teams.
Ambulances in the Bondi Junction area responded to calls reporting “a man running around Westfield (shopping centre) with a knife”.
