Xabi Alonso celebrates title with Leverkusen: ‘Too special’

The Spanish coach praises the results and praises the great names in the club’s history

There is a festive atmosphere in Bayer Leverkusen. With the German title secured after the 5-0 defeat against Werder Bremen, coach Xabi Alonso is in a state of grace. The main architect of the team’s way of playing, the coach praised the result and did not fail to praise the other professionals who came close to an unprecedented achievement.

“It’s something especially nice for all of us. Great coaches and players were here and everyone was rewarded today. It’s a great moment and we have to celebrate. If you win the Bundesliga, you have to celebrate today with the fans and families. It’s special. It was fantastic to win the first championship with Leverkusen after 120 years of club history,” said Xabi Alonso.

The coach also took the opportunity to give a hint on how he will celebrate the unprecedented German title.

“Lots of beer, German beer, tomorrow it’s free. In football sometimes everything goes fast, but today we have to stop and have fun,” he added.

Xabi Alonso has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2026 and, despite interest from the European giants, has already said he will stay at the club next season. But, before thinking about 2024/2025, the Aspirinas still want to finish the Bundesliga unbeaten. In the next rounds of the German Championship, Bayer will face Borussia Dortmund (21/04), Stuttgart (27/04), Eintracht Frankfurt (05/05), Bochum (12/05) and Augsburg (18/05).

Furthermore, Leverkusen is alive in the German Cup and Europa League. Bayer will face Kaiserslautern in the national knockout final on May 25; while in the Europa League they will face West Ham, in the second leg of the quarter-finals, this Thursday (18). Aspirinas won the first leg 2-0 and could also lose due to goal difference.
