On April 5, 2024, Netflix released the series “Parasyte: The Grey”. With only six episodes of horror and fiction, the work is based on the universe of the Parasyte manga, or Kiseijū, created in 1988 by Hitoshi Iwaaki.
The series tells the story of an invasion of extraterrestrials, carried out by a group of alien parasites who infect humans and manage to control them. Capable of resisting alien control, young Su-In (Jeon So-nee) is humanity’s great hope.
To put an end to the invasion plan, which involves inserting creatures among the political leaders, he counts on the help of Team Gray, who is an elite force in society.
Are there any signs of a possible sequel to the Parasyte series?
At the end of the series, there are several gaps for there to be a continuation, such as the appearance of the character Shinichi Izumi, who plays the protagonist in the manga that served as inspiration for the Netflix work.
In the manga, Shinichi Izumi plays the protagonist, preventing a parasite from taking over his brain, but the creature manages to lodge itself in his arm. Thus they begin a bizarre relationship.
The character’s presence at the end of “Parasyte: The Gray” suggests that the work is, in fact, a sequel to the manga, as it opens up new conflicts with aliens, who may have managed to infiltrate several people in the world.
However, Netflix has not yet officially announced a sequel to its production. The company is currently waiting for more results to order new seasons of its works. If they are positive, we will probably see the second season.
critical reception
Critical reception for the “Parasyte: The Gray” series has been good. On Rotten Tomatoes the work had 100% approval. On IMDB the score assigned was 7.3. At Digital Media Talkings, Pramit Chatterjee stated that the series is “a great extension of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, while also being a relevant work of art that comments on the times we live in.”
In Decider, Joe Keller stated that the work “has enough action to keep viewers interested, but the story of Su-in’s mutant existence is also what will keep us glued to the screen.”
