This wallpaper is banned in Dragon Ball! Therefore, cities are systematically destroyed by characters

Whether they’re Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, Celie, or Buu, the famous Dragon Ball characters always do a lot of damage. When they send a Kamehameha or go into Super Saiyan mode, it’s best to stay away from them!

While they mostly fight in the open countryside, or in desolate places sheltered from the general audience (such as the Tournament of Power arena in Dragon Ball Super), sometimes Goku and his friends get in on the action. in the middle of the city and that they turn hundreds of buildings into ashes in seconds.

But beyond the colossal powers of his protagonists, if Akira Toriyama’s work systematically involves the destruction of the cities in which his battles take place, it is for very specific reasons of efficiency (and even a little laziness)!

“It was tiring to paint the background.”

Indeed, as the famous mangaka (who tragically passed away on March 1st) stated between the pages of the official guide. Dragon Ball ForeverHe worked hard to break down the places where his characters struggled to avoid being constantly redrawn:

“Actually, it was because drawing the backgrounds was tiring. City fights are hard…all the characters get power-ups and if they’re fighting in a city, they have to destroy buildings. So when I was drawing cities, it was in anticipation of destroying them later so I could draw them because It was obvious that I was going to destroy them.

“The central city is destroyed in about three squares.”

“If my assistant took too long, it meant that next time I would have to draw them myself (…) He explained, specifying that he was therefore removing these restrictive decorations as quickly as possible.

“The central city is destroyed in about three squares. That’s because I decided to immediately destroy all the places, backgrounds that were a bit cumbersome, like cities.”

Likewise, if the characters’ hair sprouts when they transform into a Super Saiyan, it’s to save ink and prevent it from being systematically dyed black.
