This is a project that will make all fans of The Walking Dead comics jealous. In the past, comic book writer Robert Kirkman has raised the possibility that an animated series adaptation could faithfully follow the story of the original work, unlike the live-action series.
Changes desired by the creator of the comic
The eleven seasons of The Horror Program (and its spin-off series, including the new The Ones Who Live) brought many changes to the comic book storyline. The fortunes of certain iconic characters changed and the series also introduced new characters such as Daryl Dixon.
Compared to the comics, these changes did not bother Robert Kirkman, on the contrary. The latter also encouraged the writers of the series to follow new directions, even if they wanted to kill off the protagonist of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes (which was not done).
Rights blocked by AMC
Due to a question asked by a fan (Via ComicBook.com), Robert Kirkman returned to the project of turning the comic into an animated series. However, despite several years of development, the program is nowhere near the light of day – due to rights issues.
Currently carried by AMC, it doesn’t allow a series project to see the light of day without a deal with a cable channel. Therefore, the answer of the American screenwriter suggests that the animated series Walking Dead is unfortunately not in the priorities of the American network.
A new series from The Walking Dead universe called The Ones Who Live can be seen every Friday exclusively on Paramount+.
