South Korean classic “Oldboy” will become a series

The director of the original film, Park Chan-wook, will produce the adaptation for the Lionsgate studio

Lionsgate Television will produce a series based on the iconic South Korean film “Oldboy,” in collaboration with original director Park Chan-wook.

The 2003 work received rave reviews, won 40 international awards and is widely considered one of the best films of the 21st century.

Park directed and co-wrote “Oldboy,” which itself was loosely based on a Japanese manga of the same name. He will produce the new version of the series, which has already received an American film remake, directed by Spike Lee in 2013.

“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision to bring ‘Oldboy’ to the world of television,” Park said in a statement. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand represents bold, original and risky storytelling.”

The studio also commented. “Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation and we are thrilled to partner with him to bring his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen,” said Scott Herbst, executive vice president and head of scripted development at Lionsgate Television. “This series adaptation of ‘Oldboy’ will deliver the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and visceral style that made the film a classic.”
