It’s not uncommon to see contemporary black-and-white works on Netflix. On the cinematic side, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and David Fincher’s Mank chose to offer a unique aesthetic that often served the story. Adding to the list is Ripley, a series by Steven Zailian.
Stand out from other adaptations
Adapted from the novel Mr. Ripley By Patricia Highsmith, published in 1955, this fiction follows the Italian adventures of conman Tom Ripley, who is responsible for bringing a billionaire’s son back to America. Between identity theft, manipulation and murder, the series explores the thoughts of a born manipulator.
Before Ripley, the novel was made into movies twice. In 1960 with Alain Delon in Plein Soleil and in 1999 with Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley. This version is distinguished by the serial format, but also by the use of black and white.
“Scary and Dark”
Beyond simple artistic bias, creator Stephen Zailian — a major Hollywood screenwriter — explains this choice for several reasons. The first to stay true to the spirit of the book. “The edition I had on my desk had a black and white cover that was very exciting“, he explains variety.
In addition, it was important, he said, to stand out from other adaptations by offering something new. “I also thought the story was very sinister and dark, so I couldn’t imagine that it could take place in a sublime Italian setting, with beautiful blue skies and very colorful clothes.“- he adds IndieWire.
Finally, Ripley is an obvious homage to 1940s film noir. The creator wants to recreate this same atmosphere with a significant contrast between black and white. The result is stunning.
