Last Friday, to everyone’s surprise, CBS announced that SWAT, the cop series hosted by Shemar Moore, would be returning for an eighth season. An unexpected twist for a fiction that continues to rise from its ashes.
After being canceled at the end of the sixth season in May 2023, SWAT finally survived thanks to the mobilization of fans. So CBS decided to offer the seventh and final series of episodes currently airing in the United States.
And if viewers began to get used to the idea that they would soon have to say goodbye to their favorite characters, the American channel changed their minds once again with the renewal of the eighth round of SWAT.
Open final
Even though filming for season 7 of the detective series ended last week, just two days after its sudden cancellation, the writers still chose to write an open ending for the characters.
At the start of the final season, showrunner Andrew Dettman said TVLine :”The season was presented to us as definitely the last. But I’ve always thought, talking to actors and other writers, that we have to keep hope alive.”
“A streak ain’t over ’til it’s over, right? So we approached this finale as an opportunity to write a brilliant farewell… in case it really was the end.“
How does season 7 end?
While we still don’t know how SWAT Season 7, which airs May 17 on CBS, will end at this point, Kenny Johnson, Dominic Lucas’ interpreter, confided in March of last year that the script didn’t include an ending. 20 sets.
“This is a great final episode.“, the actor told TVLine. But it definitely leaves the door open. There is no final ending where each character leaves for a new horizon. They left it open to anyone who decided to continue to do so.”
Now it remains to be seen if the fate of certain characters will change after this surprise update. The character played by Kenny Johnson retired early after suffering serious injuries.
Will the writers decide to bring her back for Season 8? Answer next year on CBS.
