Joaquin Phoenix plays Napoleon Bonaparte in the film directed by Ridley Scott
Brian Cox participated as a speaker at the HistFest while promoting the play Long Day’s Journey Into Night, in which he is the protagonist. During the event, he gave his opinion on the performance of Joaquin Phoenix in Napoleonwhich received nominations for the Oscar.
“It’s terrible,” he began Cox. “A truly terrible performance from Joaquin Phoenix. It’s really horrible. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s completely his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott help him. I would have done much better than Joaquin Phoenix, I tell you this. You can say it’s a good drama. No — they’re lies.”
“I think he has an appropriate name. Joaquin… Wackeen… crazy (‘wacky’, in English)”, the actor made a pun. “It’s a kind of crazy performance.”
The actor of Succession still lamented the lack of verisimilitude in the film Ridley Scott. The director went so far as to say that historical fact checkers should “figure out what to do” in an interview with The New Yorker (via Variety).
