Just like in the series, Gadd’s stalker came into his life when he was a waiter dealing with a traumatic event and offered him a free cup of tea. This happened in 2015.
What started as an innocent fan eventually escalated to an unbearable point: his wife sent him 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters. Every one of the emails featured in “Baby Reindeer” were real.
The stalker also kept a close eye on the lives of people close to the comedian, such as his parents and a girl he started dating.
When Richard Gadd wanted to report the situation to the police, he was faced with a system that rejected his complaints and had high demands for processing them.
The harassment lasted for four years, until 2019.
While the Netflix series largely sticks to Gadd’s experiences, some details have been changed to protect the identity of the stalker and others involved.
In real life, Martha is not called that, and the comedian has said he will not reveal her identity.

Just as Richard Gatt chose not to reveal the identity of his harasser, he is withholding the details of how the proceedings against him were resolved.
In an interview with The Times, the actor hinted that the woman in question is not in prison: “I didn’t want to put someone in prison with that level of mental illness.”
In several interviews, Gadd has stated that she now understands bullying as a form of mental illness.
After this episode, Richard Gadd created “Baby Reindeer” as a one-man production. The show premiered in 2019 in Edinburgh and, after gaining huge popularity, Netflix adapted it into a mini-series.
