The Bolsonaro clan should be present in force at the new demonstration called by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for Sunday 21st in Rio by senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and the city councilor of Rio. Carlos Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) confirmed his presence at the event scheduled for 10am, on Copacabana beach. In February, only the senator was present on Avenida Paulista.
Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL), who spoke to the public in Sao Paulo for 15 minutes, is expected to repeat the speech and the religious tone of the statements, together with her husband. In a video published last Friday, the 12th, on her Instagram profile, Michelle invited them to the Rio event saying that they will “demonstrate to the world” that they are “positioned in God”. Among the boys, it has not yet been defined who will speak to the fans present on Avenida Atlântica.
Statements on the platform are expected to focus on the defense of Bolsonaro, who is under investigation by the Federal Police (PF) for his alleged involvement and that of his allies in a coup attempt after the 2022 elections. The strategy of Bolsonaro supporters is those claim that the “coup project” – a document to declare a state of siege in the country and which, according to investigations, was drawn up by Bolsonaro – is the “biggest fake news in the history of Brazil”.
Among the political sons, only Jair Renan (PL-SC), pre-candidate city councilor in Balneário Camboriú, is not expected to attend the event. He became a defendant in March, accused of the crimes of forgery, use of a false document and money laundering.
Carlos, who is also pre-campaigning for a new term on the Rio City Council, is not expected to speak alongside his father. The Rio councilor’s office said he would not organize the event, but would simply attend it.
In February Carlos did not reveal why he had not attended the first demonstration in February. Eduardo Bolsonaro, who had also missed the event in Sao Paulo, then reported that he had canceled his flight from the United States, where he was attending an American right-wing conference.
Once again, as in Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro asked protesters not to bring posters “or any banners” to the event. In February, under pressure from the PF’s investigation into an alleged coup attempt, he and his allies feared legal consequences of messages against the STF. The protesters responded to the request.
Strengthening Ramagem’s candidacy in Rio
In the trio, in addition to the Bolsonaro family, the federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ), pre-candidate for mayor of Rio, should be highlighted. He should not speak due to the risk of a statement being framed as early election propaganda. which is probably fine. According to the Higher Electoral Court (TSE), election advertising can only start on August 16 this year.
If it is impossible to speak without risking sanctions, the pre-candidate for mayor will have to count on the endorsement of the Bolsonaro couple on the platform, something that has already happened on other occasions. The PL’s strategy is to associate its image both with the former president, for issues related to entrepreneurship and patriotism, and with the former first lady Michelle, with greater appeal on issues delegated to women in the party, such as role of the family, conservative values and female participation in politics.
The three shared the stage in March, at the launch of Ramagem’s pre-candidacy at the Mocidade Independente court in Padre Miguel, in the west of Rio. On Wednesday 17th, on the occasion of the debut of the parties’ speeches on television, the deputy appeared on Michelle’s side, speaking about public safety in Rio.
Former director general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Ramagem is under investigation for alleged illegal espionage carried out during the period in which he was head of the agency. He denies involvement in irregularities.
