It’s Shyamala’s summer! As Ishana Shyamalan, daughter of acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan, prepares to release The Watchers, her directorial debut (in theaters June 12), her father has released a trailer for Trap, his new feature film slated to hit theaters. August 7.
A year after Knock at the Cabin , M. Night Shyamalan returns with Trap , a psychological thriller shot late last year in Canada starring Josh Hartnett, Hayley Mills, Rolando Dávila-Beltran, Ariel Donohue and Alison Peele.
Saleka, Shyamalan’s second daughter, an R&B singer-songwriter, plays Lady Raven, the star of the concert.
In The Trap, a father and his daughter attend a concert, but the father quickly realizes that the event is a trap set by the police to catch the serial killer “The Butcher”. If Shyamalan used to keep us in suspense until now, with the first trailer we learn that Josh Hartnett’s character is a serial killer…
AlloCiné was able to speak to the release of the trailer for Trap M. Night Shyamalan. The director talks to us about his sixteenth feature film and how he constantly tries to reinvent himself. with trap, he completely innovates by making the film from the villain’s point of view. familiarity.
AlloCiné: This trailer is crazy and different from what you’ve already done. Can you tell us about it?
M. Night Shyamalan : I always try to make a film that is a combination of several genres and really stands out from the crowd. First of all, I want to surprise the audience with a completely unique and never-before-seen vision.
I think after a career of thirty years I can confirm that my audience comes to see my films because they have something unique, they are not blockbusters or announced sequels…
trap
Above all, I try to offer an artistic vision of a subject that is always surprising and full of suspense. I know the Hollywood system doesn’t like it because it’s often harder to sell movies like that.
Trap comes from a collaboration with my second daughter Saleka, who is a singer. In the film, she plays the role of a rock star, Lady Raven. The idea for this film came from the Saleka sequence that played around the world.
We, him and I, are fans of Prince and especially the music video purple rain. We wanted to create a cinematic experience where the music is really part of the structure of the story. It took us two years to find the perfect structure for this plot, but I think we succeeded.

What should the audience expect from this new film?
M. Night Shyamalan: I think the audience will be surprised by my approach, because the film unfolds through the eyes of the main character, who turns out to be a villain. It’s a point of view I’ve never tried before. I also think the film has some dark humor that will surprise a lot of people. There are also moments of unexpected tension and fear.
This is something I have never tried before.
Tell us about Trapp’s casting and Josh Hartnett’s big comeback.
M. Night Shyamalan : My approach to casting has nothing to do with what they usually do in Hollywood. I shoot with great precision and I know exactly what we will shoot on the 17th day of shooting. Nothing is left to chance.
Therefore, for all my films, I look for an actor who fully embraces my approach and can make himself available, body and soul, for what I create.
When I met Josh, who lives near London, I met a man and father of 4 with great inner wealth. He is brilliant. I loved him in Black Mirror and of course as Ernest Lawrence in Oppenheimer. He was the perfect actor for such an ambiguous role.

trap
What was your biggest challenge creating Trap?
M. Night Shyamalan : There is no doubt about the arrangement of this giant concert, which is the main location of our intrigue. It was epic. I wanted to put the audience at the center of a giant concert, and I think the result will surprise you. We really believe.
I am less stressed than at the beginning of my career.
How has your approach as a director evolved since you started thirty years ago?
M. Night Shyamalan : It’s a very good question! I think now I know how to have a little more fun with my work. I’m less stressed than at the beginning of my career, I probably feel less pressure.
I think there was a very serious tone in my cinematic approach at first. But gradually I let go and the humor started. I hope that now I manage to scare you as well as make you laugh.
You released your film two months after your daughter Isana Shyamalan’s Les Getteurs, which you produced. What’s it like to have two movies this summer?
M. Night Shyamalan : It’s really a coincidence because we wanted the best release dates for these two movies. Turns out both were ready for the summer, so Warners suggested we release them back-to-back, hence the marketing gimmick: “The Summer of Shyamalan.”
trap In cinemas from August 7 and supervisors It will be shown in theaters from June 12.
