Ecuador’s former vice president, Jorge Glas, sent a handwritten letter asking for help from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The letter was delivered by former president Ernesto Samper last Wednesday, the 17th, in Bogota, before the meeting between the Brazilian head of state and Colombian president Gustavo Petro.
“I am Jorge Glas, former MP[-presidente] by Raphael [Correa]. I’m stuck again, help me,” she wrote.
Glas was arrested after an operation by the Ecuadorian police at the Mexican embassy in Quito on the 5th. At the time, some Mexican diplomats who were there were attacked by security forces.
Convicted of corruption, the former Colombian vice president received diplomatic asylum at the Mexican embassy. Amid the scandal, the court deemed the arrest illegal and the case was repudiated by other countries.
In the letter Glas also writes that “only international pressure” can help him and reports that he is “in the worst prison in the country and is on a hunger strike”. Responsible for delivering the letter to Lua, the former Colombian president called the letter “desperate” and said he took advantage of the Brazilian leader’s visit, as reported in an interview with CNN. He even made a transcription because he thought the handwriting was illegible.
“He expressed to me the concern for the life and the cry of a person who is in difficulty,” he reported.

Samper explained why he gave the letter to the president. “Lula has undisputed recognition and leadership in the region, his views are widely listened to and I think that’s why they turned to him.”
Lula also commented on the invasion of the Mexican embassy during the extraordinary summit of the heads of state of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), last Tuesday 15th. She called the episode ‘simply unacceptable’ and said this was not unique to Mexico.
“Ecuador’s formal apology is a first step in the right direction,” Lula underlined at the time.
The former Colombian president also sent letters to the leaders of other countries, including Mexico and Colombia.
