Anthracite on Netflix: How did Jean-Marc Barry rejuvenate?

In Anthracite, Netflix’s new French series released on the online platform on April 10, Ida, played by Noemi Schmidt, goes to a small village in the Alps to find her father, Solal Heilmann, who was kidnapped a few days ago.

This former journalist, played by Jean-Marc Barry, actually investigated a sect created in the region in 1994 that committed mass suicide. And it seems that thirty years later Solal returned to this village to resume his activities.

But why did he decide to go back there? Is his disappearance connected to the murder of a woman who was killed according to the rituals of a strange society? Ida will try to solve this mystery with the help of Jaro (Hatik), a petty criminal on a quest for redemption.

However, they quickly realize that their involvement in this case is anything but random, and that the answers they seek are rooted in the secrets of their past…

90s flashbacks

Anthracite’s investigation takes place in two different eras, the writers used many flashbacks that transport subscribers to the mid-90s, if the four heroes of the series were not yet born, this is the character that we can see at this time. Jumps in time: Solal, a journalist played by Jean-Marc Barry.

Obviously, Ida’s father’s face was rejuvenated to match the era. Make-up or special effects: how did the production manage to rejuvenate the actor?

How did Jean-Marc Barry rejuvenate?

While it’s quite common to use make-up and other tricks to age actors, it’s more difficult to do the same to make them look younger. For Anthracite, the production chose Jean-Marc Barry’s 30-year vacation thanks to special effects.

Unlike her peers who sometimes had to spend hours on make-up, as was the case with Hatiq and her huge scar on her back, she made virtually no effort to look youthful.

I shot all the scenes normally and then rejuvenated them in post-production– he confided before adding with a laugh: “I’ve never had so much hair. His character also has a leg amputated during his dangerous investigation.

We used the same process for my leg that was cut. It was removed in post-production. In the end, the only difficulty I had on the set of the series was running (laughs)..”
