Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday congratulated Taiwanese drag queen Nymphia Wind for winning the reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race, becoming the first East Asian person to achieve the feat.
Tsai and her party, the Democratic Progressive Party, are considered allies of LGBTQ+ rights and have transformed the island into a bastion of liberal values. In 2019, Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the first country in Asia to approve the policy.
“Congratulations to you, Nymphia Wind, for being so talented in the difficult art of drag, and for being the first Taiwanese to take the stage and win RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Tsai wrote, in English, on the social network Instagram. “After you were crowned queen, you said ‘Taiwan, this is for you.’ Taiwan thanks you for living so fearlessly.”
Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, hosts East Asia’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride parade every October. Last year, Vice President Lai Ching-te, who won January’s election to become the country’s next president, attended the event and became the most senior government official to attend the event.
