On the anniversary of the Federal Capital, find out what one of Brasilia’s most important musicians, Hamilton de Holanda, has to say about the city’s music scene
Brasilia’s birthday is todayApril 21st, 64 years have passed since the foundation of the city. Cultures from all corners of the country meet and mix in the federal capital, enriching the region’s music, food and art scene.
One of the symbols of this cultural melting pot is the rhythm of the chorinho that resonates in the bars and streets of the city. The history of Brasilia it is intrinsically linked to crying, from its inception. Even during the iron years of the military dictatorship, Jacob do Bandolim lived in the city for a short period and gave impetus to the revival of chorinho in the country.
Since then many musicians have appeared in the city, among them an exponent of the Choro, Hamilton from Hollandwho is one of the founders of the first Choro schools in the world and creator of 10 string mandolin. Brasilia anniversary: the cultural sign of the choro
We asked the artist why crying became a cultural brand of Brasilia. He explains that chorinho is a rhythm that transcends time and urban changes, while maintaining it Long live the tradition of Brazilian music.
Hamilton also states that President Juscelino Kubitschek was a rhythm enthusiast and encouraged many musicians and cultural agents to move to Brasilia. The mandolin player says:
The musicians who went to the capital planted a seed of Choro which was watered and has continued to bear fruit ever since. The presence of a Choro Club since the 70s and of the Choro School since the 90s also contributes a lot.
The population itself is aware of the historical importance of Choro and participates in events, clubs, meetings, etc. There is an event currently underway that continues this story, namely the Crying on the Board. Anyway, Brasilia can be considered a city that loves and takes care of the Choro.

The influence of Brasilia on musicians
Brasilia is a city with characteristics unique architectural and urban planning, which enhance the horizon and the reddish sunset, typical of the cerrado. Another striking feature of Brasilia is social inequality, with the isolation of the poorest regions from the administrative center of the city.

We also asked the mandolinist what his expectations are for the future of the Brazilian music scene. He demonstrates an optimistic perspective, exalts the diversity and power that exists in Brasilia innovate and enhance the cultural roots of the territory and the country.
Hamilton declares that Brasilia will always be a source of talent, as this has been the capital’s vocation since its foundation. He explains:
The coexistence of people from all over Brazil, even from different places on the planet, favors the emergence of creative and restless artists. It will always be like this.

Musical influences in Brasilia
Hamilton says he feels a great variety of influences on the music scene of the federal capital. He mentions the culture of the Northeast, the state of Goiás and the Southeast region.
As far as rhythms go, Hamilton talks about the Brazilian rock which always generates good names and also mentions the Hip hop and the Rap music, which have grown in recent years. Finally the musician says:
This cultural diversity is reflected in the richness and originality of the music produced in the city. I think there will always be room for the most diverse styles and cultures.
