Alex Poatan successfully defended his light heavyweight belt at UFC 300 by knocking out Jamahal Hill, and now he waits to find out the next steps of his future in the Octagon. This future could open up several options for Brazilians.
After beating Hill, Poatan even suggested he might fight at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro, but broken fingers prevented that dream from becoming a reality. As well as the possibility of facing Tom Aspinall, interim heavyweight champion, a desire expressed by the fighter.
And there’s also Magomed Ankalaev, considered the No. 1 contender in the light heavyweight division. Regarding this situation with so many options, Poatan gave an interview to the podcast ‘Trocação Franca’ and stated that the decision on when and against whom he will fight is up to him and his managers.
– I want to see what works for me. But I’m not alone in this, I have my own agents who help me with this. I’m a fighting cock. If you put another guy in front of me to fight me, and I can fight, we’ll fight, right? But we have to see what is best for me, for my career and for my team. I will fight with anyone, but it’s not just up to me to decide – said the light heavyweight champion.
All this also brings with it another factor that increases this indecision. Poatan has not yet decided whether his next fight will be a fresh defense of his light heavyweight title, against Ankalaev or any other challenger, or whether he will accept the challenge of moving up the division once again. The foot problems also ended up making his future prospects a little more difficult.

– It’s complicated, because I haven’t had time to think about it yet. If it takes me a while, I would like to defend the belt again. If I take a long time to return and I have to move up to heavyweight and get injured, when will I defend the title? I don’t want to stay here and keep the division. I imagined the best possible situation (wanting to fight at UFC 301), but I have two broken fingers – commented the Brazilian.
– My feet are screwed. It’s complicated, because I don’t want to stop the division here. It would be nice if I fought at UFC 301, in the heavyweight division, and then gave me a chance to fight for the belt. I think it would be nice – added Poatan.
