Apple and the International Football Federation (FIFA) are close to closing a billion-dollar deal that gives the iPhone owner television rights to the 2025 Club World Cup (or World Super Cup), as reported by the New York Times. The partnership is expected to be announced by the end of the month and is valued at approximately R$5 billion.
As a general practice, FIFA neither confirms nor denies trade discussions.
The FIFA spokesperson told Reuters.
With 32 teams competing in one of football’s biggest tournaments, the 2025 Club World Cup is expected to take place between June 15 and July 13. This will be the first edition of the quadrennial international football championship organized by FIFA.
Of the vacant positions, 22 have already been filled, with three Brazilian clubs confirmed. They are: Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense, champions of the last three editions of the Copa Libertadores.
Other notable teams that managed to secure a place include: Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Benfica.
It is worth mentioning that several streaming companies have invested in sports content, taking away the traditional television monopoly. Netflix, for example, was the latest to enter the world of broadcasting with The Netflix Cup competition. Remember it here!
It’s also worth noting that Apple already owns the rights to Major League Soccer (MLS), the premier men’s club professional soccer league in the United States. Its competitor Prime Video has the broadcast rights of the Copa do Brasil with CBF. Max, from HBO, can broadcast Champions League, Paulistão and other matches.
