As the years have passed, actors involved in this film have revealed little-known filming details, as did actor John Rhys-Davies, who played the dwarf Gimli in the trilogy, recently.

Although the film epic left an indelible mark on the history of cinema and on everyone who participated in it, Rhys-Davies categorically refused to get tattoos with his partners on the set.

During the filming of the first episode of the saga, the protagonists decided to tattoo the word “nine” in the language of the elves as a reminder of the Fellowship of the Ring. Rhys-Davies, however, had a different perspective and decided to decline his colleagues’ invitation.

In an interview for the ‘Inside of You’ podcast, the actor shared that tattoos, for him, have cultural value and meaning, with a different take on the event in question.

“I come from a generation that respects two types of tattoos. First, that of active military personnel. It’s part of the bond that unites them with their colleagues in the Navy or Air Force. And of course, there are the tribal ones (… ) These tattoos have value and cultural significance,” he said.

So when it came time to get the tattoo, Rhys-Davis refused.

“First of all, I don’t like needles. But more than that, it seems to be a generational thing. These tattoos have cultural value and meaning. “If you and I had a tattoo for every movie we did, we’d look like ‘Illustrated Man,’ right?

Years later, Orlando Bloom shared a photo on Instagram with Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Ian McKellen and Sean Bean from the day they got their tattoos.

In the picture, they can all be seen wearing the word ‘nine’ in elves on different parts of their bodies, although only 8 people had this design, after John Rhys-Davis sent a double in his place.

“We felt the experience was fantastic and profound enough to leave a mark on us. So we did it, a week before we finished filming,” Elijah Wood said on the red carpet in Leicester Square.
