Buzz Lightyear: The long-awaited reaction from the actor who doubles as a character in Toy Story

Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story saga, talks for the first time about the change in voice cast and his replacement by Chris Evans in the latest Pixar film.

The character in Buzz l’Eclair is voiced by Chris Evans in the original version (and François Civil in the French version). In the Toy Story saga started in 1996 by John Lasseter, Space Ranger is voiced by Tim Allen (and Richard Darbois in French).

Following the announcement of a change in voice casting for Pixar’s latest film, fans have been up in arms, demanding the return of Tim Allen. But Buzz Lightyear takes place before the events of Toy Story, and it’s not about a toy.

The Angus MacLaine film, which hits our theaters on June 22nd, is indeed the film that young Andy saw before demanding a Baz doll from his parents. This is the hero who brought the toy to life.

If the original voice actor hasn’t commented on this change yet, he just did, and for him, Buzz Lightyear in the latest Pixar movie has nothing to do with Buzz Lightyear. Lightning from Toy Story. Hence this substitution.

The short answer is that I quit because I had nothing else to do.”, he told Extra about the spin-off. “It’s a whole new team that really has nothing to do with the first movies.”

Tim Allen went on to explain that he had talked to the studio years ago about a potential Buzz Lightyear-centric film, and also revealed that he originally thought Buzz Lightyear was a live-action project rather than an animated film. The actor also regretted the lack of connection between Angus MacLaine’s feature film and the Toy Story saga.

Great story, but it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the toy. It has nothing to do with my base. I wish there was a better connection.

The film really focuses on Buzz Lightyear’s youth, from his arrival on a hostile planet to his encounter with the young recruits of the Zap Patrol. The only real connection to the mother saga is the presence of Emperor Spin, Base’s sworn enemy from the first Toy Story.

For his part, Chris Evans already spoke in December 2020 and said that no one can compare to Tim Allen.

“TWorking with Pixar is a dream come true. I have been a big fan of their films since the beginning. My team couldn’t contain their excitement when they told me Pixar had something for me. Only they said, “Baz light years.”

I didn’t understand what that meant because, to me, Buzz is Tim Allen and no one can compare to his performance. I needed to know what made this story different and why it was worth telling.

I can tell you two things with absolute certainty: 1 – I couldn’t smile on the whole pitch. 2 – Everyone can be calm. And be very enthusiastic. Trust me when I tell you that the teams at Pixar really know what they’re doing. This movie is going to be very special, I can’t really express my excitement in words. It always makes me smile when I think about it.”

Buzz Lightyear is currently in theaters.
