Fernando Muslera retires from the Uruguay national team

The goalkeeper has surpassed the threshold of 100 appearances with the Celeste shirt

An iconic and successful figure of the Uruguayan national team announced this week that he will no longer defend the colors of the Celeste. This is the archer Fernando Muslera, currently 37 years old. His last official match with the two-time world champion team will therefore be the friendly against Panama, in June 2022. At the time, Diego Alonso was still coaching the Uruguayans in a duel that ended in a 5-0 victory.

Through official channels, the Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) not only made the information official but also published a collection in honor of the archer. The material contains important saves among the 133 matches played by Muslera with the national team. There were four editions of the World Cup (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022) in which he was present as well as winning the Copa América in 2011.

The most Uruguayan in… Buenos Aires?

Despite his huge identification with the Uruguay team and the CharrĂșa people, Fernando Muslera is originally from Buenos Aires, in neighboring Argentina. However, it took just eight months for his parents, Uruguayans by birth, to return to their country of origin.

After training in the youth team of Montevideo Wanderers, the goalkeeper moved to Nacional in 2007, but soon attracted the attention of the Old Continent. So much so that, in the same year, he was sold to Lazio, a club where he remained for four seasons and obtained Italian citizenship. So, he has three distinct nationalities.

In 2011, when he was already in the squad of the Uruguayan national team, Muslera began his beautiful and long-lasting story with the Galatasaray shirt, a club where he still remains today. In the gigantic country divided between Europe and Asia there are 502 matches and 15 trophies between the Turkish Championship, Cup and Turkish Super Cup.
