As a fan of Ryan Gosling, you may not be aware of the superhero episode of his career, the pilot that was ordered into a TV series: The Incredibles.
After the failure of Hercules vs. Ares, a series in which he played a young version of Kevin Sorbo from the Hercules series, Gosling was hired to play the title character in The Unbelievables, a US-Canadian co-production. The first episode is written and directed by Ed Solomon, who recently wrote the screenplay for the science fiction film Men in Black with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
“It made me fall in love with cinema”: Perhaps thanks to this film by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ryan Gosling became an actor!

With The Unbelievables, Solomon dives back into the world of comics. Samantha Esteban plays Jane, a woman with an elastic body, and Ryan Gosling lends his features to Josh, a man who can fly. Josh is the son of Action Armstrong (Corbin Bernsen), a former member of the superhero group The Unbelievables, now retired.
The villains are a vaudevillian (Tim Carr) and his sidekick Herschel (Steve Carell, then a complete unknown). Now more or less disciplined and librarians should welcome reading the book behind the steel Written by vaudevillian’s sworn enemy: “Big S”, suggesting it’s Superman.

The tone of the series is decidedly comedic, and the best parts of this pilot really revolve around the scenes between Karel and Curry. We sense the potential for a solid comedy that pokes fun at the superhero universe that was then represented by the Batman movies and even before Marvel exploded at the box office the following year with X-Men and Spider-Man (2002), and then much later with Iron Man. (2008).
The pilot of The Unbelievables will never be ordered to series and will remain a dead letter. Gosling would play small roles before landing the lead role in the independent film Danny Balint, who would mark him and put him on the map in Leland’s United States (2003), then Never Forget (2004). Since then, his career has taken off.
