Education for Life is a new mentality for the educational process: learning is not limited to the diploma, but must last a lifetime
The concept of Lifelong learningor Education for Life, is based on four fundamental pillars: Learning to Know, Learning to Do, Learning to Live together and Learning to Be.
This new mentality regarding the training process is based on the principle that a single university course is no longer sufficient, even if integrated with a postgraduate course, but rather a continuous process of improvement and recycling. In this way, continuing education would be a learning process that goes well beyond obtaining a diploma.
This search for personal improvement combines with the demands of an increasingly competitive job market, which seeks professionals who master the techniques in various fields and are constantly updated.
Among the main characteristics developed by professionals based on the concept of continuous training listed by Human Resources companies are the development of new skills, the stimulation of creativity, the mastery of technologies and the thirst for continuous knowledge.
According to José Cláudio Securato, CEO of Sao Paulo School of Economics, the concept of lifelong learning gained momentum around 2010, in the wake of the digital revolution. “According to a report by the World Economic Forum, today 50% of people need retraining, that’s 4 billion people.”
Securato points out that, in a world that changes very quickly, the idea of learning in a static way has lost its strength. For him, the first piece of advice for anyone who wants to incorporate the concept of lifelong learning into their daily lives is to not fall into the trap of an abundance of knowledge.
“Today we have a certain ‘knowledge obesity’, with countless available sources, podcasts, conferences, often free. For example, people may know what artificial intelligence is, but they don’t necessarily know how to apply it.”
According to him it is necessary to distinguish between knowing and being able to do it. “When you go to the market you need to know how to use this knowledge. Develop skills on the chosen topics.”
Another important measure is to look for in-depth courses in your areas of interest. “There are no miracles. No one is going to take a course over the weekend and gain expertise in an area. There are many benefits to an abundance of knowledge, in terms of self-improvement. But you need to understand where you need to go deeper, improve and strategize “he says.
Another useful tip for establishing criteria in continuing education is to ask for help from professionals specialized in career management and also ask your work colleagues for advice. “Today, with the proliferation of influencers and YouTubers, we live in an era of educational entertainment. This is part of the trap of false learning and happens in different fields, with the emergence of false authorities on the topics,” says Securato.
For Gabriel Campos, director of Provendas Consulting, who also act as a business consultant, headhunter and career advisor, it is essential for professionals to carry out a career review and planning at least every two years. “Don’t stand still, move in your zone. Not doing so can give the impression of having stopped in time or having adapted. You have to be ready for market changes, in a world where things become obsolete very quickly”, highlights .
According to Cláudia Costin, who was part of the Institute for Lifelong Learning at UNESCO, 3 billion jobs will be eliminated by 2030, replaced by artificial intelligence and other forms of automation. “The positions that will be created from now on will require new skills. Anyone who wants to enter the market will have to train again, have a new profession.”
The psychologist Letícia Jordani Milaré, currently retired, is an example of a professional who has incorporated the concept of life education into her daily life. “I worked for almost 15 years in a multinational company, I entered the training sector and soon realized that I had a lot to learn.”
He already has training as a professional coach and has been studying Psychoanalysis for two years. “One course leads to another. I’ve always been very curious, but I think there has to be a purpose, regardless of age. Even older people need to be aware of this need.”
