Summary

Gastão Cassel wrote the book “Free Software for Journalists and Communication Professionals” to help professionals find convenient and effective solutions for their needs. The work consists of two parts: the first part describing the evolution of information technologies and the second part highlighting free tools.

The search for efficient and accessible work tools is part of the daily life of professionals from different fields. With this in mind, the journalist and publicist Gastão Cassel wrote the book “Free software for journalists and communication professionals – How to work with high-quality programs without spending on licenses and subscriptions, or resorting to piracy”.

The work is a practical guide aimed at journalists, advertisers, designers, podcasters and videographers who are looking for convenient and effective alternatives for their professional needs. Available for free download, it collects the author’s experiences in computerizing his work and also a guide with free software to meet different professional needs.

“The vast majority are free software which, in addition to not belonging to a company, is open source for modification and redistribution,” explains the author. “With this book I want to share my experiences and help other professionals find efficient and accessible technological solutions,” says Cassel.

Book divided into two parts

The author does not limit himself to providing guidance on the choice and use of software, but also reflects on the constant technological evolution in communication, demonstrating how to stay up to date with free and accessible solutions. Therefore, Cassel divided the book into two parts:

In the first part he recounts his journey from the introduction of information technology into editorial offices and advertising agencies, a period marked by enthusiasm and learning. “A technological achievement that I followed with interest, curiosity and a lot of practical work,” he describes.

In the second part, the focus is on free software itself. The author highlights tools for text editing, photo processing, creating vector graphics, audio and video editing
