Discover one of the lesser-known films in Matt Damon’s filmography on Netflix. Released to polite indifference in French theaters in early 2017, The Great Wall grossed “only” $334.9 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. It was a disappointment for Blockbuster.
Matt Damon and Tian Jing
Story ? Imprisoned beneath the Great Wall of China, two mercenaries (Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal) discover that it serves as a shield against the most terrifying creatures that would otherwise invade the world and destroy everything in their path. They join an elite faction of the Chinese army, tasked with a delicate mission to put an end to these monsters called the Tao once and for all.
Chinese director Yimou Zhang (Wives and Concubines, Live!, Forbidden City) delivers the blockbuster, which sees Damon in great shape after he stepped out on the set of Jason Bourne (2016). He is opposite Tian Jing (Kong: Skull Island, Pacific Rim: Uprising), Willem Dafoe, Hanyu Zhang, Andy Lau and Pilu Asbeck.

Matt Damon shoots a bow
With a press score of 2.5 out of 5 on AlloCiné, The Great Wall didn’t really impress critics and audiences more or less stuck with the film it gave. Average rating 2.8 out of 5.
While the script will probably leave you a little lost, visually, there’s something to keep from the film and it’s worth giving it a chance.

Pedro Pascal
In June 2012, the film was to star Henry Cavill in the role of Matt Damon and Benjamin Walker in Pedro Pascal and directed by Edward Zwick ( The Last Samurai ). The project could not be implemented due to the weather. Filming in China and New Zealand required better weather and additional funding and was pushed back to spring 2013.
But in September 2012, Ed Zwick left the project, which was only recovered by Zhang in March 2014. Henry Cavill, who was very busy with the DC Universe and his role as Superman, was left out of the credits, which opened the door for Matt Damon.
