Brazil beats Cuba and wins the title of Pan-American team

Brazil defeated Cuba and won the title of the mixed team competition of the Pan American and Oceanian Judo Championships, in Arena Carioca 1, this Sunday (28). The team composed of Rafaela Silva, Ellen Froner, Beatriz Souza, Vinicius Ardina, Marcelo Gomes and Leonardo Gonçalves won the final 4-1 to win their third consecutive title in the continental competition.




Initially, three countries were going to compete in the mixed-team Pan-American tournament. However, Argentina withdrew from participation the day before and withdrew from the competition. This left only Brazil and Cuba, who had to face each other before the final for regulatory reasons. In it, Brazil won 4-1, with an alternative team.

In order: Leonardo Gonçalves (+90kg) beat Jonathan Loynaz by ippon; Shirlen Nascimento (57 kg) surpassed Aleanny Carbonell with two waza-ari; Michael Marcelinho (73 kg) beat Orlando Polanco, also with two waza-ari; Ellen Froner (70 kg) lost to Maylin Del Toro Carvajal, by ippon; and finally, Marcelo Gomes beat Naysdel Cardoso by ippon.

How did the final go?

Less than an hour later, the two nations returned to play in the final, now with different lineups. Brazil started to lose, after Ellen Froner (70 kg) lost to Maylin Del Toro Carvajal, again by ippon. Then, Marcelo Gomes (90 kg) left everything the same by beating Naysdel Cardoso in the osaekomi, by ippon.

Beatriz Souza (+70kg) gave the hosts the lead by quickly beating Lianat Cardona, also using the immobilization technique. Then, Leonardo Gonçalves (+90kg) also needed just 32 seconds to beat Jonathan Loynaz again and leave Brazil with match point. It was Rafaela Silva’s turn (57kg) to close the match, beating Aleanny Carbonell, also by ippon.

End of the campaign

With yet another title, Brazil closes the Pan American and Oceanian Judo Championships with 16 medals. There were 15 individual competitions, six gold, three silver and six bronze, as well as one gold for mixed teams. The country comfortably leads the medal table of the competition, repeating the performances obtained in the last two editions of the continental championship.
